Coach “Mayhem” Meets Coach Bisping on TUF 14

Two of mixed martial arts’ most compelling figures are unquestionably Michael “The Count” Bisping and Jason “Mayhem” Miller, with both garnering more media attention than practically anyone in the middleweight division. The two 185-pound contenders have proven they can fight at the elite level of the sport as well.

But can they coach?

Bisping answered that question as he led two of his fighters to victory on season nine of The Ultimate Fighter. Now it’s Miller’s turn to prove himself against the brash Brit when they collide as coaches on season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter, which begins filming next month in Las Vegas.

Manchester’s Bisping, winner of season three of TUF, is currently riding a three fight winning streak that includes victories over Dan Miller, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Jorge Rivera.

California’s Miller is back in the UFC after a six year absence where he fought the likes of Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy, and “Jacare” Souza, while also gaining worldwide fame for his stint as host of MTV’s “Bully Beatdown.” In his most recent bout, in September of 2010, he submitted Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba, and now he has his sights on Bisping both in the gym and in the Octagon.

Miller’s originally scheduled July bout against Aaron Simpson at UFC 132 has been canceled. A new opponent for Simpson is currently being sought.

Tavares Replaces ‘Mayhem,’ Steps in Front of ‘A-Train’ at UFC 132

by Chris Nelson (cnelson@sherdog.com) Brad Tavares will meet Aaron Simpson in a middleweight matchup at UFC 132, replacing Simpson’s original opponent, Jason Miller, who last week was drafted to coach the 14th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite Michael Bisping.

The UFC Tuesday announced that Tavares (Pictured) has verbally agreed to take part in the July 2 event, which emanates from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a bantamweight title bout between champion Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.

Tavares, 23, is a former “TUF” contestant, having reached the UFC reality show’s 11th-season semifinals before losing to eventual tournament winner Court McGee. The Hawaiian made his official Octagon debut in June 2010 with a unanimous decision over castmate Seth Baczynski, whom Tavares had beaten via disqualification during the season. On Jan. 1, Tavares added a major win to his 7-0 professional record, knocking out veteran Phil Baroni in the first round of their UFC 125 meeting.

An NCAA Division I wrestling standout and longtime assistant coach at Arizona State University, Simpson carries an MMA record of 9-2 with six knockouts. The 36-year-old “A-Train” began his career with eight straight wins, besting the likes of Ed Herman and Tom Lawlor in the UFC before falling to Chris Leben in a June 2010 stoppage. After dropping a decision to fellow wrestler Mark Munoz in November, Simpson rebounded on March 26 with a unanimous verdict over Mario Miranda at UFC Fight Night 24.

Diaz and Miller nearly came to blows backstage following Saturday night?s ?Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2? event and had to be separated by Showtime officials.

According to a source who witnessed the scene, Diaz and Miller locked eyes while passing each other in the hallway between the dressing rooms and the pressroom as the post-event press conference took place. Words were exchanged, and Diaz allegedly threw a water bottle at Miller. The two were immediately broken up by members of their respective camps and Showtime officials.
